Theatres regulate space and time for their audiences and demand collective engagement. Other kinds of venues โ like museums or libraries โ are designed to separate and isolate even large crowds and promote liberal ideas of emancipation. Everyone decides for themselves how long they want to stay and engage. The 25th edition of โThe Art of Assemblyโ looks at artistic approaches to assemblies in cultural places not originally intended for performance. Choreographer Mette Edvardsen looks for soft spaces where her discrete performances become a porous part of the environment, where performers and audiences are in more than one space at the same time. Artist Tino Sehgal has been working with the DNA of museums and the liberal assemblies created by exhibitions, which he uses for his constructed situations โ thin lines that direct attention and gazes, choreographing the paths of the audience.

About EXPLORING PLUREALITIES:
By implementing transdisciplinary activities in the field of contemporary performing and visual arts, the EXPLORING PLUREALITIES project aims to develop the audience and support contemporary art creators in Romania, in partnership with Norwegian artist Mette Edvardsen and in cooperation with Romanian and international artists and professionals. Creating a favorable framework for the development of art, through opportunities for professional evolution – job shadowing and mentoring, the project implemented by the 4Culture Association proposes a progressive approach, based on analysis and prospecting of innovative directions, by identifying and assuming hybrid artistic formats.
4Culture projects have a European dimension, the potential to multiply the results and a large public exposure. Through the PERSPECTIVES IN MOTION activity within the EXPLORING PLUREALITIES project, we propose two symposia and a digital platform, which will enable the resources of 4Culture and its partners and will ensure a dissemination of productions made for new audiences for contemporary performing arts – dance, performance, and visual arts (installations, new media projects and digital art).

Biography
Tino Sehgalย (London, 1976) studied economics and dance. In 2005, he represented Germany at the Venice Biennale. The Guggenheim, Tate Modern, and dOCUMENTA (13) have also presented solo shows of his work. In 2013, he was awarded the Golden Lion at the 55th Venice Biennale. The art of Tino Sehgal is immaterial; it takes shape in the moment in which the spectator encounters it. Since 2000, he has been constructing live situations in which performers enter into contact with the visitors and spectators by way of movements, conversations, or song, inviting them to influence the structure of the work.
Mette Edvardsenย โขย Soft Spaces
or the project Time has fallen asleep in the afternoon sunshine a group of people dedicate themselves to memorizing a book of their choice. Together they form a library collection consisting of living books. The books pass their time in libraries reading, memorizing, talking to each other, going for walks outside, prepared to be read by a visitor. The readings take place as intimate one-to-one encounters where the book recites its content for the visitor. Libraries are chosen for this work not just a background or a scenery, but for functional and formal reasons. We go to libraries to read or borrow books, we pass time, we can come and go as we like. Libraries are one of few remaining public spaces that are open and free for the public to use. When performing in the library as โbooksโ, we permeate and become a porous part of the environment, at the same time as we share intimate spaces with our readers. Book and reader oscillate between different spaces โ the space of the library, the space of performance, and the space of reading.
